Professor Mona Baker et al have been elected by the readers of Inttranews as their “Linguists of the Year” for 2016, for "Translating Dissent: Voices from and with the Egyptian Revolution", a unique volume of essays on the importance of translation in our time.

Drawing on a wide range of genres and modalities, from documentary film and subtitling to oral narratives, web comics and street art, the eighteen essays in "Translating Dissent: Voices from and with the Egyptian Revolution" reveal the dynamics and complexities of translation in protest movements across the world.

Described by Marianne Maeckelbergh, author of The Will of the Many, as “a book about solidarity”, and as “an act of solidarity” in its own right, the volume includes contributions by activists who reflect on what it means to work for justice, within and across borders, and to attempt to effect change at home while conversing with others who are fighting similar battles elsewhere.

Professor Baker argues in her opening chapter that if networks of solidarity are to become more effective and reflect the values of horizontality, non-hierarchy and pluralism that inform contemporary protest movements, translation, interpreting, subtitling and other forms of mediation must be brought to the centre of the political arena and conceptualized as integral elements of the revolutionary project.

Professor Baker was able to examine the use of translation in the context of the Egyptian revolution thanks to an 18-month full-time Fellowship funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council in the UK, and to additional support provided by the Centre for Translation and Intercultural Studies at the University of Manchester.

The total amount of the donations by sponsors this year to the Inttranews "Linguist of the Year" awards prize money was EUR 1,000. The winner of the Prize is invited to select the charitable organization or NGO to which the prize money is to be donated. The NGO will be announced in a separate press release.
